Commercial property specialists Buccleuch Property and Argon Properties have begun development of a brand new 60,000 sq. ft. storage and distribution unit for leading parcel delivery service DPD at their Velocity site in Washington, Tyne and Wear.

Reflecting a £16m investment in the area, the unit will sit on a 10-acre brownfield site which has been undeveloped for over 25 years.  The building will help to address a shortage of bespoke warehouse and distribution space in the region and is expected to create 125 jobs for DPD.

Contractor Parkway Construction has begun work on site with completion due in early 2022.

Neil Finnie, Director at Buccleuch Property said:

“This is a great example of positive reuse of a brownfield site to create significant investment and new jobs.  We look forward to working with DPD to create a state of the art distribution centre”.

Louise Ferguson, General Manager for DPD said:

“This site in Tyne and Wear represents significant additional investment in our network which is made up of 84 depots throughout the UK. This additional depot will ensure we are able to continue to provide the best possible delivery service to customers living in the area following the continued growth in demand for our services and of course also brings much needed jobs to the area.”

Richard Wilks, Managing Director at Argon Properties said:

“As a North East based developer it is fantastic to be involved in securing long term jobs for the area and redeveloping a site that has been vacant for so long.”

Naylors and Cushman & Wakefield acted for Buccleuch Property with SBH acting for DPD.
